MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARES) in its latest quarterly crop report upgraded Australia’s cotton crop in 2015/16 season by 11 percent to 5.60 lakh tons of cotton lint and around 7.92 lakh tons of cottonseed.
The increase in production forecast reflects the increase in planted area and an assumed 27 percent fall in average yield. Average yield is assumed to due to increase in area planted to dryland cotton, which typically has an average yield around 70 percent lower than irrigated cotton.
The bureau forecast area planted to cotton to rise 52 percent to 3 lakh hectares, largely driven by an increase in area planted to dryland cotton of 1 lakh hectares.
This will be the first time in three years that a significant area has been planted to dryland cotton.
Area planted to irrigated cotton is forecast to increase by 2 percent to 2 lakh hectares, largely reflecting an increase from last year in water storage levels in dams serving cotton growing regions.
