Mumbai, April 11 (Commoditiescontrol):In a relief to the agricultural sector, India is likely to witness normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon this year. This news was announced by M Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, at a press conference held on Tuesday. According to the announcement, the rainfall is expected to be 96 per cent (with an error margin of 5 per cent) of the long-period average of roughly 87 cm.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that normal rains are likely in many parts of the peninsular region, adjoining eastern and northeastern regions, and some parts of northwest India. However, normal to below-normal rainfall is expected over parts of northwest India, west, central, and northeast regions. M Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology at IMD, added that there was a “67 per cent probability of normal to above-normal rainfall”.
While the forecast is good news for the agricultural sector, the IMD also warned that El Nino conditions are likely to develop during this monsoon season, and their impact may be felt in the second half of the season. However, Mohapatra clarified that all El Nino years are not necessarily bad monsoon years.
On the other hand, positive Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are likely to develop during the southwest monsoon season, which could also influence the rainfall pattern.
This will be the fifth straight year of normal or above-normal summer rains, boosting farm and overall economic growth. The southwest monsoon usually lashes the southern tip of Kerala around June 1 and retreats by September.
The announcement is good news for farmers who rely on the monsoon for their crops. Normal rainfall will help boost agricultural production, which in turn will boost the overall economy. However, the Indian government can also proactively manage water resources and avoid drought-like situations in regions that may receive below-normal rainfall.
