WORLD WHEAT PROSPECTS

Mostly favorable conditions for pre-winter development of the wheat crop in
the southern plains.
Favorable conditions for filling and maturing wheat in central Argentina.
Recent rainfall through key winter wheat areas of Turkey will help improve
conditions for establishment of this crop, following earlier drought conditions
in the area. Additional rainfall may move in at the end of this week.
Mostly favorable conditions, at this time, for slow development of winter
wheat in southern Ukraine and south Russia. Recent rainfall has helped recharge
soil moisture in key growing areas, after late summer dryness concerns and
heat. Wheat is likely entering dormancy from northern Ukraine northward.
Mainly favorable conditions for planting winter wheat and development
through western Europe at this time. Recent rains have slowed planting progress
in the east while greatly improving soil moisture following drier and hotter
late summer weather. Dryness and drought has been of increasing concern in
Spain and in Italy. Spain has had showers and cooler weather during the past
week but more rain is needed to end the drought. Italy has had heavy rains
which should end any further concerns over dryness issues.
Drier, warm to sometimes hot weather favors maturing winter wheat and the
harvest in Western Australia. Recent rainfall and cooler temperatures will
favor late filling wheat through southern New South Wales and Victoria. Drier
weather remains a concern for immature wheat in South Australia. Recent drier
weather has favored mature wheat and the harvest in northern NSW and southern
Queensland. Showers may redevelop in this area at the end of this week.
Mostly favorable moisture and temperatures for development of recently
planted winter wheat through the North China Plain.
