WORLD RICE PROSPECTS

A turn to drier, warmer weather in rice areas of Indochina at this time
should favor the maturing crop and the harvest. Above normal seasonal rains
will provide adequate irrigation for dry season rice crops.
In the Philippines episodes of seasonal showers will favor winter grown rice
crops. Heavy rains due to Typhoon Nock-Ten likely caused flooding for some rice
areas last month. Severe flooding may have occurred. Prospects may be lower for
the current crop due to above normal rains in some locations.
The Rabi rice crop grown in east and south India will rely on irrigation to
support favorable development at this time. The crop may be under some stress
due to above normal temperatures and an early end in the seasonally rains in
some sections.
