WORLD COTTON PROSPECTS
More rain is needed for developing cotton in south Texas especially in the
lower Rio Grande Valley. Rain is needed to recharge soil moisture in west Texas
prior to planting.
The harvest of cotton in Pakistan and northwest India is reported complete
at this time. Mostly favorable conditions for the harvest of cotton elsewhere
in India at this time.
A drier, warmer trend in cotton areas of eastern Australia will favor the
maturing crop and harvesting.
Mostly favorable conditions at this time for field work in preparation for
planting cotton in the southern portion of former Asian Russia...primary cotton
areas are in Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.
Cotton areas of west China were mainly dry and warm during the first week of
April. This should favor field work in preparation for planting this mostly
irrigated crop. The east China cotton belt saw rain and above normal
temperatures through southern areas, drier and cooler through northern areas.
This portion of China's crop relies more on seasonal rains during the summer
growing season.
