Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus
Highlights: Dry conditions or just a little light snow. Temperatures below
Days 1-3: Dry weather Tuesday. Some light snow in the north on Wednesday and
some mixed precipitation Thursday. Temperatures near to below normal Tuesday,
near to above normal Wednesday, above normal Thursday.
Days 4-5: Dry conditions or just some light snow in the north Friday. Some
light to locally moderate snow in the north Saturday. Temperatures above
Mostly favorable conditions, at this time, for winter grain in Ukraine and
south Russia. Fall rainfall helped recharge soil moisture in key growing areas,
after late summer dryness and heat. Grain is dormant in most areas at this
time. Snow cover is deep in some locations due to recent stormy weather. This
will help protect the crop in the event of colder temperatures.
Mainly favorable conditions for winter grains through western and eastern
Europe at this time. However, there is some concern that the crop may not be as
winter hardy as it should be due to recent warmth. Winter time rainfall in
Spain at this time will help to ease dryness concerns after early season
drought. Italy continues to benefit from more favorable rains at this time as
Episodes of hot to very hot temperatures in eastern Australia increases
stress to sorghum at times.
Mostly favorable conditions for the harvest of Kharif Sorghum in India at
this time. Dry and hot weather increases stress on the Rabi crop but this crop
relies mostly in irrigation.
Limited rainfall and near to above normal temperatures in central Argentina
decreases soil moisture and increases stress on developing corn and soybeans,
especially pollinating corn at this time. This situation bears watching.
Episodes of above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall increases
the risk to maize in South Africa. Episodes of hot temperatures when the crop
is pollinating will reduce yield prospects. The crop is further along in
eastern areas at this time. This week we may see some increase in shower
activity and more seasonal temperatures but this is somewhat uncertain.
Moderate to heavy snow in the northwest Midwest will impact transportation.
There is no significant cold weather indicated during the next 7-10 days.
