cooler during this period.
East Europe
Highlights: Light to moderate showers favoring central and southeast areas
Friday. Dry or with only a few light showers with locally heavier favoring
northern areas during the weekend. Temperatures above normal west and
southeast, somewhat more variable northeast.
Days 1-3: Light to moderate showers and thundershowers favoring north and
southeast areas Monday into Tuesday. Dry or with only a few scattered showers
Wednesday. Temperatures turn somewhat cooler in the northern areas during this
period, continued somewhat hotter in the south.
Hot and mostly dry weather increases the risk to heading and filling spring
wheat in the northern Plains.
Some harvest disruptions in the southern plains but nothing major.
Some disruptions at times to the harvest in the southeast Midwest.
Winter wheat in west and southeast Europe ranges from maturing to harvest
at this time and is reported to be in fair to good condition. Prior hot, dry
weather likely favored the mature crop and harvest. Showers and cooler
conditions more recently. Showers in northeast Europe wheat areas will favor
reproductive to filling winter wheat and early planted spring wheat.
Winter wheat in Ukraine, west and south Russia ranges from reproductive
growth to filling at this time. Dryness remains of much concern in
north-central Ukraine due to well below normal rainfall during the past 90
days. Winter wheat elsewhere in Ukraine as well as in west and south Russia is
in much better condition at this time.
Showers and warm temperatures favor emergence and early growth of spring
wheat from the Urals region eastward through northern Kazakh and southern
Siberia. However, recent hot temperatures begin to diminish soil moisture
somewhat through southern areas.
Winter wheat in east-central China ranges from maturation to harvest at this
time. Hot, dry weather early this week has likely favored the crop harvest.
Wheat planting in Australia normally takes place during May and June.
Dryness has been of increasing concern recently. However showers in West
Australia wheat areas and in northeast areas during the past week will help
ease concerns...somewhat. Most wheat areas of Australia need more rain to
promote favorable development.
