WORLD SUGAR PROSPECTS
A powerful tropical cyclone made landfall along the middle coast of
Queensland Australia during the last week of March. Torrential rains and
damaging winds were reported in the area. Unharvested sugarcane may have been
damaged due to high winds and severe flooding, if these conditions reached in
the main growing belt.
Mostly favorable conditions for developing cane in Sao Paulo Brazil.
However, a recent drier trend is of some concern.
Periods of scattered rains may slow the harvest of old crop sugarcane
through southern China while improving soil moisture for planting and
development of the new crop.
Showers in sugarcane growing areas of India during the winter period over
the Ganges plains and in the far south. These showers will favor development of
early planted new crop while causing only minor field work delays. The
sugarcane belt has turned drier and hotter again more recently.
Sugarcane areas of southeast Africa saw increasing thunderstorm activity at
the end of last week, a favorable development after the hot weather for most of
last week. Seasonal rainfall has averaged below normal in some sugarcane areas
which may impact final production numbers.
Seasonal to above average rains through the southeast Asia region will favor
sugarcane production but may delay the harvest.
