India's 2018-19 Rabi Crops Sowing Down 4.75% Y/Y At 581.50 Lakh Hectare

NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) - Total area sown under rabi (winter-sown) crops were at 581.50 lakh hectare as on January 11 in the current season, down by 4.75 percent or 29.01 lakh hectare from 610.51 lakh hectare over the year-ago period, as per the Agriculture Ministry's data released on Friday.

Wheat has been sown in 294.07 lakh hectare so far in the rabi season of the 2018-19 crop year (July-June) as against 300.51 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Sowing of rabi crops begin from October and harvesting from March. Wheat is the main rabi crop.

Among winter crops, planting of oilseeds has been slightly down as farmers have covered 77.97 lakh hectare so far. In the year-ago period, oilseeds were sown in 78.75 lakh hectare. Among oilseeds, mustard/rapeseed acreage was higher by 2.54 percent at 68.28 lakh heactare from 66.60 lakh hectare.

In case of pulses, area was lagging behind at 147.91 lakh hectare so far this rabi season as against 156.90 lakh hectare in the same period last year. Among pulses, chana acreage reached 94.61 lakh hectare so far, down 10.14 percent from 105.28 lakh hectare achieved in the same period last year.

Coarse cereals area was covered in 44.98 lakh hectare as against 53.47 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
