Paddy, Maize Farming Gathers Pace In Bihar, Despite Deficient Rains

Area under paddy and maize crop has increased as compared to last year in Bihar, a key rice producer and consumer in the country, despite deficient monsoon rains recorded in the state so far. However, acreage of both crops is still a little down from the target fixed by the state government.


As on August 17, 2016, paddy transplantation was complete in 31.39 lakh hectares of land in Bihar in the ongoing kharif season while paddy acreage on the corresponding date last year was 29.92 lakh hectares, according to the data received from the Directorate of Statistics & Evaluation, Bihar (SASA) that releases estimates area, production and productivity in respect of principal crops of food grains, oilseeds, sugarcane, fibers and important commercial and horticulture crops.


Area under paddy crop has increased 4.9 percent as compared to last year in Bihar.
The government of Bihar has set a target for 34 lakh hectares for paddy farming this season of which 92.34 percent of area is reported under paddy crop, as per the latest sowing coverage report.


Prior to transplanting, paddy seedlings are raised in nursery. The area under paddy seedlings nursery is 3.35 lakh hectares against 3.24 lakh hectares in the corresponding season last year, while government’s target for the seedlings area is 3.4 lakh hectares.


In the current kharif season, maize acreage has achieved nearly 91.12 percent of the target as area under maize is reported at 4.32 lakh hectares so far against 4.2 lakh hectares in the corresponding year ago time.


As far as rainfall is concerned, Bihar received 24 percent deficient rains in June but it has improved in July with 4 percent above normal rains. But monsoon remained quite discouraging in ongoing month of August which recorded 44 percent departure of rainfall till August 17, 2017.

Hence, total rainfall received in the current monsoon season remained 14 percent below normal in the state, as per the latest report.


Normally 672.6 mm rainfall is received in Bihar till August 17 while 576.0 mm has been received so far, however, it remained better than last year when only 471.2 mm rainfall was received till corresponding point of time.
