New Delhi, October 19 (CommoditiesControl): The Indian government has now permitted the export of 95,000 metric tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Nepal. Previously, export restrictions were in place since July 20, primarily due to the high demand for rice within India. During this period, only basmati rice was allowed to be imported by Nepal from India.

The notification authorizing this export was issued by India's Director General of Foreign Trade. Under this new arrangement, a total quota of 1.03 million metric tonnes of non-basmati white rice is allocated for export to seven countries, including Nepal, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Seychelles.

These exports are facilitated through the National Cooperative Exports Limited of India, with Nepal's allocation being 95,000 metric tonnes.

To discourage the import of non-basmati rice in August, India levied a 20 per cent export duty on non-basmati white rice. This export grant is expected to ease pressure on the local grain market. Nepal has been importing rice and paddy from India in huge quantities for the past decade to compensate for the food deficit.
