Mumbai, 29 Jun (Commoditiescontrol):According to the latest report by Statistics Canada, Canadian farmers have witnessed a remarkable surge in wheat cultivation, leading to the highest wheat area in over two decades. The nationwide data reveals that a total of 26.9 million acres were dedicated to wheat planting in 2023, indicating a significant 6.7% increase compared to the previous year.
The substantial expansion in wheat cultivation was primarily driven by notable growth in both spring wheat and durum wheat areas. Spring wheat, which contributed the most to the total wheat area, experienced an impressive 8.0% rise, reaching 19.5 million acres. Similarly, durum wheat witnessed a modest 0.5% increase, amounting to 6.0 million acres.
Saskatchewan played a pivotal role in driving the overall growth, with a remarkable 6.9% increase in wheat cultivation, resulting in 14.2 million acres dedicated to wheat production. In Saskatchewan, the spring wheat area witnessed a significant 10.0% surge, reaching 9.1 million acres, while the durum wheat area grew by 2.2% to encompass 5.0 million acres.
Alberta producers reported planting 7.9 million acres of wheat, marking a 4.4% increase from 2022. The growth in wheat cultivation in Alberta was mainly driven by a notable 6.4% expansion in the spring wheat area, reaching 6.8 million acres in 2023. However, the durum wheat area in the province experienced a decline of 8.3%, amounting to 996,800 acres.
Farmers in Manitoba reported a total wheat-seeded area increase of 7.2%, reaching 3.3 million acres.
