Mumbai, May 5 (Commoditiescontrol): As of Friday, the wheat procurement in Punjab has exceeded 91% of the target set by the Food Corporation of India for the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2023-24. The FCI had aimed to procure 132 Lakh Metric Tonne (LMT) of wheat from Punjab, and as of Friday, 120 LMT had already been procured.
The region had faced concerns about wheat production and procurement earlier due to excessive rainfall in March and April, which had caused a significant portion of the standing wheat crop to lodge. However, the production and procurement are expected to meet the target or fall short by a small margin.
The arrival of 1.29 LMT of wheat crop in grain markets on Friday brought the total arrival in Punjab to 120.16 LMT. Of this, 119.79 LMT or 99.70% has already been procured, with 76.94 LMT being lifted from purchase centres, accounting for 64.23% of the total procurement.
Across the country, the FCI had aimed to procure 341.5 LMT of wheat, of which 222.89 LMT had been procured as per the latest dashboard.
