MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Australia agriculture department (ABARES) has revised chana (chickpea) 2016-17 area and production forecast higher in September release from previous estimates.
According to recent (September) report drawn by Abares chana acreage in the country during 2016-17 is likely to rise 16.64 percent at 8.22 lakh hectares compared to 7.17 estimated in June month and sharply from 6.61 lakh hectares in 2015-16.
Higher acreage has prompted agriculture department to raise production forecast for 2016-17 at 12.34 lakh tonnes, up from 10.90 lakh tonnes estimated in June release. Agri department has kept 2015-16 production estimate unchanged at 10.13 lakh tonnes.
Queensland
Chickpea production is forecast to increase by 26 percent in 2016–17 to a record 7 lakh tonnes. This forecast reflects an estimated 33 percent rise in area planted to chickpeas. The average yield is forecast to decline from the previous season but is still expected to be above average. The forecast decline in the average yield reflects relatively late planting and wetter than average conditions in some regions.
Lentil: South Australia
Lentil production is forecast to increase by 14 per cent in 2016−17 to 235 000 tonnes. Production growth is expected to result from an estimated 10 per cent increase in planted area. The estimated increase in planted area was mostly on Yorke Peninsula. An increase in expected returns may have encouraged some producers to plant area to lentils before the conclusion of the recommended rest period for this crop, increasing the risk of disease outbreak. However, yields are expected to be generally above average because of the largely favourable growing conditions.
