Mumbai, 08 Nov 2023 (Commoditiescontrol):In a robust start to the 2023/24 marketing year, Canadian pea exports have shown exceptional vigor, with September figures nearly quadrupling those of August, despite a notable downturn in production. According to Statistics Canada's recent report on November 7, pea exports soared to 440,085 tonnes in September, a steep climb from the modest 99,645 tonnes exported in August.
This surge has brought the total exports for the first two months of the marketing year to 539,730 tonnes, matching the exports levels recorded during the same period last year. These numbers come as a welcome surprise given the country's pea production experienced a substantial decrease this year, down by one-third to 2.27 million tonnes as per the latest StatCan data.
China has emerged as the dominant consumer in the global pea market, acquiring approximately 75% of Canada's pea exports. Other significant importers include Bangladesh, the United States, and Colombia. The data suggest a persistent international demand for Canadian peas, particularly the yellow variety, which constituted the majority of the exports. Conversely, green peas made up a meager three percent of the export volume.
In an insightful indicator of market trends, Canadian farmers have managed to deliver just over one million tonnes of peas into the commercial stream by October 29, keeping pace with delivery rates from the previous year. These statistics, provided by the Canadian Grain Commission, reflect a steady domestic supply line feeding into the vigorous export market.
