Mumbai, 24 Oct (Commoditiescontrol): Agriculture and Agri Food Canada’s (AAFC) has released an updated outlook for lentil production and market dynamics for the crop years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024.
Highlights for 2022-23:
- Lentil exports grew to 22 lakh tonnes (Lt), a 37% rise from the previous year.
- Of this, 15 lakh tonnes were red lentils, and 7 lakh tonnes were green lentils.
- Domestic consumption was 2.7 lakh tonnes.
- Carry-out stocks were down to 1.5 lakh tonnes.
Outlook for 2023-24:
- Production might decrease by 33%, settling at 15 lakh tonnes.
- Green lentils might see a rise in production to 4 lakh tonnes, but red lentils could drop to 10 lakh tonnes. Other lentil types might slightly increase to 2 lakh tonnes.
- Overall, there might be 10 lakh tonnes fewer lentils next year.
- Exports might reduce by 38% to 14 lakh tonnes.
- Local consumption might remain around 2.64 lakh tonnes.
- Stocks left at the end of next year might reduce to 1 lakh tonnes.
US Figures for 2023-24:
- Even with a reduced cultivated area, the US expects to produce about 2.3 lakh tonnes, which is a 4% increase from this year.
- The US plans to export around 2.5 lakh tonnes.
