Mumbai, 27 July (Commoditiescontrol): Canadian pulse exports continued at a steady pace throughout most of the 2022-23 marketing year, despite recent disruptions on the West Coast possibly impacting the final total, MarketsFarm reported.

Approximately 25% of all Canadian pea exports, 33% of lentils, and all chickpeas are typically shipped by container. A strike by British Columbia port workers in early July hindered some of the pulse movement. The labour dispute was resolved after 13 days and the Port of Vancouver announced it was "actively working to clear the backlog of ships waiting to enter (the port) caused by the recent labour strike."

By the end of May, Canada had exported 1.972 million metric tons (MMT) of lentils, with Turkey and India being the top destinations at 562.5 thousand metric tons (KMT) and 501 KMT respectively, according to data from Statistics Canada. This is a considerable increase from the 1.3 MMT of lentil exports recorded through May of the previous crop year.

Pea exports reached 2.312 MMT, marking a 42% increase compared to the same period the previous year. China was the largest importer, accounting for nearly 1.3 MMT of the total. Other significant importers of Canadian peas included Bangladesh, the US, and Pakistan.

Canada also exported 203.3 KMT of chickpeas during the 2022-23 crop year-to-date. The U.S. emerged as the top destination, followed by Turkey. The chickpea exports through May exceeded the previous year's 136 KMT over a ten-month period.
