Mumbai, 22 Nov (Commoditiescontrol): Canada: In its latest estimates, Statistics Canada projects chickpea production to reach 134,000 tonnes for the 2023-24 season, a slight increase of 6,000 tonnes compared to the previous year.
This uptick is attributed to a larger seeded area, despite a dip in yields. Both kabuli and desi chickpea varieties are expected to see a rise in production. However, the total supply is anticipated to drop by 36%, primarily due to significantly lower carry-in stocks from the previous year.
Exports are forecasted at 120,000 tonnes, with the United States and Pakistan being the primary markets. Carry-out stocks are likely to decline, largely as a consequence of the reduced supply.
Notably, the average price of chickpeas is predicted to hit a record high of $1,060 per tonne, spurred by superior Canadian crop quality and global production declines.
United States: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates an 8% increase in chickpea seeding area, totaling 0.38 million acres (0.15 million hectares). Assuming average yields, the USDA forecasts the 2023-24 chickpea production to be around 0.23 million tonnes, marking a significant 36% increase from the previous year.
