Mumbai, Aug 16(Commoditiescontrol) : AUGUST 16, 2023 – Recent statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture have indicated a 2.4% decrease in acreage allocated for Moong cultivation, totaling 30.03 lakh hectares as of August 11, 2023. This decline is mainly attributed to significant reductions in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Despite the overall shrinkage in acreage, Rajasthan has exhibited a notable increase in Moong acreage. Ground-level insights predict the national Moong acreage will likely see an overall 4-5% reduction owing to the dramatic acreage drop in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Nevertheless, the rising acreage in Rajasthan offers a silver lining.
Weather reports from the week ending August 09, 2023, have brought positive tidings for Moong farmers, particularly in Rajasthan. Key districts such as Nagaur, Jodhpur, Pali, Ajmer, and Tonk have experienced favorable rainfall. Significantly, these districts are responsible for approximately 53% of India's Kharif Moong production.
Given the current circumstances, Rajasthan appears to be the beacon of hope for Moong cultivation this season. The decline in Karnataka and Maharashtra's acreage underscores the importance of favorable conditions in Rajasthan's major Moong-producing districts for achieving a robust production this season.
However, stakeholders and farmers are advised to keep a close watch on the upcoming weather forecasts for the next month, as they will play a critical role in determining the final output.
