Sugarcane Sown On Nearly 5 Million Hectares In India

MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - India's sugarcane sowing reached at 4.95 million hectares as of September 14, in current season 2017-18, about 9.44 percent higher from last year, as per the weekly report released by Department of Agriculture & Cooperation and Farmers Welfare.

Sugarcane cultivation is majorly increased in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. In Maharashtra and Karnataka, cane acreage gone up due to good monsoon rain, while in Uttar Pradesh area increased, as farmers hoping a better and early return from the cash crop.

However, with the rise in the cane area, sugarcane production will also be improved in country, although sugar production is expected to be higher in next sugar season.

India's sugar mills have produced 20.3 million tonnes of sweetener in current sugar season (2016-17), while country is estimated to produce 25 million tonnes of sugar in upcoming season (2017-18), which is starting from next month on October 1st, 2017 and run until September, 30th 2018.
