MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has estimated 2016-17 cotton crop at 341 lakh bales slightly lower than its earlier estimates of 346 lakh bales released in October. However, the current production estimates are just one percent above previous season's production.

The balance sheet drawn by the CAI pegs total cotton supply for 2016-17 at 408.00 lakh bales (170kg each) while the domestic consumption is estimated at 290 lakh bales, 20 lakh bales lower than in 2015-16, Thus leaving a surplus of 114 lakh bales.

With arrivals at 108 lakh bales, according to CAI estimates in the first three months of the marketing season nearly 70 per cent of the crop is yet to arrive in the next three months.

(Note: CAI Balance Sheet has not factored exports figure)
