NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) – Jaggery (gur) market of Muzffarnagar, a key trading centre in Uttar Pradesh witnessed better activities on Saturday since early morning as it was the new marketing season (October-September) began on October 1, 2016. Arrivals of new gur products kicked off today.

Nearly 3,000 bags (40kg each) in all variants of new gur like, Khurpa, Laddoo, Rascut Dhaiya, Chaku and Jaggery powder were received at the onset of new marketing season, according to a local trading source.

New products attracted buyers as prices opened considerably higher, said Harishankar, a local trader. According to him, arrivals will gather pace in next few days as festive season is going on and demand for new products is expected to remain bullish.

New product khurpa was offered at Rs. 1,300-1,350/40kg today while it traded at Rs. 1,040-1,060/100kg on October 19, 2015. Similarly, Laddoo prices opened at Rs. 1,400-1,450/40kg, nearly Rs. 300/40kg up from last year.

Though Rascut Dhaiya was offered lower at Rs. 1,180/100kg due to weak quality but it also held over Rs. 200/40kg higher as compared to last year.

Chaku was priced at Rs. 1,400-1,450/40kg, nearly Rs. 300/40kg up from past season in the same month.

The buyers were least interested in old variants of remake existing in the cold storage.

It should be recalled that sugar prices remained considerably up in last marketing season due to fall in production in the country which led the sugar mills to clear cane dues of farmers to large extent so it is expected that farmers may sell more sugarcane to sugar mills this year.

In that case, gur plants will get less sugarcane, further production of gur will fall in new sugarcane crushing season 2016-17.

The apex sugar industry body, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has also gave such a signal in its first sugar production estimates released lately.

According to ISMA, “Since sugar mills have cleared cane price of farmers to large extent, it is expected that the supply of sugarcane towards sugar production would also increase in 2016-17 SS and cane diversion to other sweeteners like gur and khandsari may fall.” Also, the acreage under the high yielding and high recovery variety Co0238 is much more than last year in Uttar Pradesh.

Accordingly, sugar production in 2016-17 is estimated at 76.60 lakh tonnes, as compared to 68.40 lakh tonnes produced in 2015-16 SS, said ISMA.
