MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Maharashtra is the major tur/red gram producing state in the country followed by Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Due to unfavorable climatic conditions for tur cultivation and long dry spell condition in Maharashtra, production has been showing shortfall in 2014-15 and also during 2015-16.
Between October-December, 2015, tur covered the headlines of Indian commodity market due to its sudden rise in prices in spot markets.
The situation had occurred due to lack of supply and stock in domestic markets.
The following table (1) shows the estimated production of tur in 2015-16. The estimation has been made to get an idea about the future scenario in tur market, basically the supply side.
The estimation has been made on the basis of the feedback received by traders and KVK scientists from the districts as well as state as a whole.

From the table observation, we can make some conclusion on tur production in the state in the ongoing season 2015-16:
1). Total expected tur production in the state will be lower and will fall short by 10.19 percent compared to the earlier season i.e. 2014-15.
2) Only few districts like Yavatmal, Akola, Warda and Washim doing well in terms of Tur production, because these districts face favorable weather situation for tur cultivation in this year. The expected increase in tur production in Yavatmal, Akola, Warda and Washim are by 0.69 %, 37.44 %, 56.17 % and 151.39 % respectively as compared to the previous year. Therefore, Scientist, Farmers and trades are looking forward for the fair production of tur in the district in 2015-16.
