Mumbai, 05 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): India has once again extended its duty-free import period for peas, now to the end of June 2024. This marks the second extension of the policy shift, aimed at stabilizing domestic prices. To qualify for duty-free status, shipments must have "on board" bills of lading dated before June 30, 2024. After this date, imports will be reclassified as "restricted" – effectively placing a ban on them.

Official import data indicates significant shipments following recent policy changes. In December, India received approximately 11,000 metric tons (MT) of peas, followed by nearly 158,000 MT in January, with Russia as the primary source. India's Department of Customs reported that January clearances of Russian-origin peas totaled approximately 116,000 MT, followed by Turkey (33,000 MT), the United Arab Emirates (7,000 MT), and Egypt (1,000 MT).

Since India's initial duty-free import announcement, other major exporters have seen increased demand. Canada reports official pea shipments to India totaling 698,200 MT through the end of February.
