Mixed Trends in India's Rabi Crop Sowing: Wheat Down, Pulses Up

Mumbai, November 3 (Commoditiescontrol): The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare's Crops Division has released a preliminary report on the area covered by Rabi crops as of today. The statistics indicate a mixed trend in crop sowing across the nation, with some gains and some losses relative to the previous year.

The most significant crop, wheat, shows a decrease in the area sown, with 18.05 lakh hectares reported, which is 2.60 lakh hectares less than the last year. The key states contributing to wheat sowing include Madhya Pradesh (12.83 lakh ha), Punjab (2.11 lakh ha), and Uttar Pradesh (2.02 lakh ha). Minor contributions come from Rajasthan, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Maharashtra.

Rice sowing has slightly decreased by 0.55 lakh hectares, standing at 5.56 lakh hectares. Tamil Nadu leads the cultivation with 5.18 lakh ha, followed by Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.

In contrast, the plantation of pulses has seen an overall increment, with an area coverage of 38.15 lakh hectares, up by 0.50 lakh hectares from last year. Gram has experienced a drop, whereas lentil and fieldpea have shown promising increases. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are leading contributors, followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

The Shri Anna cum coarse cereals group has seen an encouraging rise, particularly in Jowar, with an area coverage of 11.21 lakh hectares, marking an increase of 3.43 lakh hectares. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the major contributors in this category.

The oilseed sector presents a mixed picture but with an overall positive growth of 3.89 lakh hectares more than the previous year, standing at 47.53 lakh hectares. Rapeseed & mustard have shown significant growth, while groundnut, safflower, and sunflower have seen reductions. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are the leading states in oilseed sowing.

The total crops' area coverage stands at 120.50 lakh hectares, with a net increase of 4.67 lakh hectares compared to the previous year.
