Kharif Crop Sowing in 2023 Sees Notable Growth, Rice and Sugarcane Lead the Way

Mumbai, September 15 (Commodities Control): The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare released figures highlighting the progress of kharif crop sowing area as of 15th September 2023. The data indicates an overall growth in sown areas compared to the previous year. Key Highlights: Rice sowing area has registered an increase, surpassing 409 lakh hectares this year. Compared to 2022's figure of 398.58 lakh hectares, there's a clear expansion in cultivation. Shri Anna/Coarse cereals sowing recorded an area of 183.11 lakh hectares, slightly more than the 181.48 lakh hectares in 2022. Sugarcane witnessed a substantial increase with a coverage area of 59.91 lakh hectares, up from 55.65 lakh hectares last year. The overall kharif crop sowing has crossed a colossal 1095 lakh hectares, marking a slight growth from 1091.87 lakh hectares in 2022. Here's a detailed breakdown of other crops:
Pulses: - Arhar: Decreased from 45.81 to 43.21 lakh hectares. - Urdbean: Slightly down at 32.25 from 32.97 lakh hectares. - Moongbean: Decreased to 31.34 lakh hectares from 33.81 lakh hectares. - Kulthi and Other pulses: Saw minor changes, remaining relatively stable. Oilseeds: - Groundnut: A decrease from 45.34 to 43.81 lakh hectares. - Soybean: An increase from 124.31 to 125.57 lakh hectares. - Sunflower: Dropped significantly to 0.70 lakh hectares from 2.00 lakh hectares. - Sesamum and other oilseeds: Experienced minor fluctuations. Fibres: - Jute & Mesta: Decreased to 6.58 lakh hectares from 6.98 lakh hectares. - Cotton: Saw a decline, with this year's figures at 123.22 lakh hectares compared to 127.29 lakh hectares in 2022. While some crops witnessed a decrease, the overall growth, especially in staple crops like rice and sugarcane, indicates a productive year for Indian agriculture.
