NEW DELHI, June 3 (Commoditiescontrol) - Area sown to summer (kharif) crops was lagging behind by 1.34 percent at 69.15 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing kharif season of the crop year 2022-23, according to data released by the agriculture ministry on Friday.
Farmers had planted summer (kharif) crops in 70.09 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
As per the latest data, area sown to paddy (the main kharif crop) remained higher at 2.14 lakh hectare till June 3 of this kharif season as against 1.74 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Area sown to oilseeds remained unchanged at 0.37 lakh hectare.
Area sown to pulses was up 34.57 percent at 1.09 lakh hectare so far this kharif season, from 0.81 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
In cash crops, area sown to cotton was however down 17.96 percent at 10.73 lakh hectare so far this kharif season, against 13.08 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Acreage under sugarcane was slightly higher at 46.67 lakh hectare as against 45.81 lakh hectare.
In case of coarse cereals, the area coverage was 1.70 lakh hectare so far in the ongoing kharif season, as against 1.82 lakh hectare in the year-ago.
