Mumbai, 05 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Prices for masur (red lentils) have fallen in major Indian markets due to a surge in arrivals. Industry sources indicate reduced demand as end-users have secured their immediate supplies.
The recent dry weather has improved the quality of incoming masur, although traders note smaller grain sizes compared to previous seasons. The Indian Meteorological Department's forecast of above-normal temperatures in North India throughout April is expected to further improve quality.
Choti masur prices in North Uttar Pradesh remained stable as harvesting peaks, ensuring strong arrivals and potential downward price pressure. Bilty masur prices were generally stable or weak, with declines in Delhi and Kanpur. Imported masur prices edged slightly higher in Mumbai, attributed to superior overseas quality.
Canadian red lentil prices (FOB) declined to $531 per MT, reflecting expectations of increased masur acreage which may pressurise landed cost of imported masur. The pace of government procurement will significantly influence the domestic masur price trend as new arrivals gain momentum.
