Mumbai, 04 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): Masur (lentil) prices showed mixed trends across India this week. Select markets reported higher prices due to improved quality, while others remained stable despite increased crop arrivals.
Improved weather conditions are a key factor. As North India experiences drier weather, the moisture content of Masur decreases, leading to better quality. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts above-normal temperatures for April, further supporting quality improvement.
In major markets of North Uttar Pradesh, Choti Masur prices remained stable despite peak harvesting season keeping arrivals high. Bilty Masur prices in Kanpur saw an increase of Rs 75-100 per quintal, while other centers reported mostly stable prices. Imported Masur prices rose by Rs 25-50 per quintal, except for Delhi where prices remained unchanged.
The lower quality of this season's domestic Masur crop could increase the demand for imported varieties, which are typically of higher quality. This would likely support prices for imported Masur. Government procurement activities and the pace of new crop arrivals will also play a key role in determining future price trends.
