Mumbai, 20 Mar 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Masur prices across major domestic markets exhibited a mixed picture. Ashoknagar saw price declines due to smaller grain sizes and lower quality arrivals, while prices increased in Bina. Other major markets remained stable. Recent dry weather has accelerated arrivals, putting upward pressure on prices in some regions.
Overall crop quality remains a concern, with smaller grain sizes and weather-related damage. This factor contributes to stable prices despite lower production estimates.
The Madras High Court has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government following a petition challenging the exclusion of masoor dal (red lentils) from a ration shop tender. The petitioner argues that beneficiaries prefer masoor dal, and its exclusion is unreasonable. The government must respond by April 10th.
Imported masur prices generally trended upwards, with Kolkata as an exception where prices remained stable. Higher landed costs and poor domestic crop quality support stable pricing for imported masur. Delhi and Mumbai registered slight price increases of Rs 25-50 per quintal.
Masur arrivals are expected to increase after Holi, potentially pressuring desi masur prices due to higher arrivals and subpar quality. However, slowing imported masur supply, government procurement at market prices, and steady domestic demand should limit the downside risk.
