Mumbai, 14 Mar 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Masur (lentil) prices in India have increased slightly, gaining Rs 20-100 per quintal across major producing regions. Analysts cite recent dry weather as the primary driver, reducing moisture content in new masur arrivals and improving their quality.
Farmers are currently holding back supplies in anticipation of selling to the government at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), which is higher than current market rates. Procurement at MSP is expected to begin next week. Typically, masur arrivals increase after the Holi festival, but government procurement may limit open market supplies, further supporting prices.
Imported masur prices have largely held steady, except in Delhi, where they've seen a Rs 25 per quintal decrease after a brief rise.
Market conditions look favorable for masur in the coming weeks. Improved quality, lower moisture levels, and government procurement should lead to potential price increases.
