Gujarat Crop Sowing Shows Mixed Results, Peanut Cultivation Surges
AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT – The latest figures from Gujarat's Agriculture Department reveal a slight overall decline in crop sowing across the state. However, the data also highlights a surprising increase in peanut cultivation, particularly in Gujarat's northern districts.
As of April 1, 2024, the total sown area in Gujarat stands at 9.98 lakh hectares, a 1% decrease from last year's 10.09 lakh hectares. While this may indicate a minor slowdown in agricultural output, specific crops have defied expectations.
Peanut Production on the Rise
Peanut (groundnut) cultivation has seen a significant 9% increase, rising from 47,683 hectares to 51,891 hectares. This unexpected growth is most noticeable in the northern regions of the state. Experts attribute the rise to favorable weather conditions and potentially a shift in farmer preferences towards peanut crops.
Other Crop Trends
Sesame: Sesame sowing has dipped by 2%, with the current area at 1.09 lakh hectares compared to last year's 1.12 lakh hectares.
Urad: Urad (black gram) shows a positive 4% increase, now covering 20,611 hectares.
Moong: Moong (green gram) experienced a marginal 1% decrease to 41,493 hectares.
