2nd Adv Estimate: Andhra Pradesh Pegs 2019-20 Cotton Output At 2.8 Million Bales, Up 48%

MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol)- Production of maize, paddy, cotton, chilli and oilseed in Andhra Pradesh is estimated to rise this season as favourable rainfall has led to higher acreage and yield, according to the state agriculture department's second advance estimate.

The state's paddy output in 2019-20 (Jul-Jun) is seen rising 6% on year to 13.1 mln tn, while maize production is seen 15% higher on year at 1.8 mln tn.

Cotton production is projected at 2.2 mln bales (1 bale = 170 kg), around 48% higher from the previous year. Production of the fibre is seen rising sharply due to higher yields. Yields in the current season is seen at 571 kg/ha, up from 409 kg/ha in the previous year.

Andhra Pradesh is among the major producers of paddy, maize and cotton. The state has pegged total foodgrain output at 16.5 mln tn, compared with 15.1 mln tn last year.

Total oilseed output is seen rising to 2.7 mln tn, up 10% on year. Sugarcane output is seen 17% lower on year at 6.5 mln tn.

Chilli production in Andhra Pradesh, the largest producer, is seen at 692,000 tn against 630,000 tn in the previous year, according to the estimate.
