Mumbai, May 8 (Commodities Control): Ukraine, one of the world's leading grain exporters, has started month of May on a robust note as it has shipped over 1 million tonnes of grains, marking a significant uptick compared to the same period last year.

According to data released by the State Customs Service and confirmed by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, as of May 8, the nation has exported a total of 42.406 million tonnes of grains and pulses since the beginning of the 2023/24 marketing year. This includes the noteworthy shipment of 1.047 million tonnes recorded within the first week of May alone.

Comparing these figures to the corresponding period last year, the increase in exports is notable. By the same date in 2023, Ukraine had shipped a slightly higher total of 42.647 million tonnes, with only 761 thousand tonnes exported in May.

Breaking down the export figures by grain type, the Ministry reported that for the current marketing year, wheat exports stood at 16.173 million tonnes (compared to 14.616 million tonnes in the 2022/23 marketing year), Barley exports totalled 2.23 million tonnes (versus 2.482 million tonnes), Rye 1.3 thousand tonnes (compared to 17.9 thousand tonnes) and Corn 23.522 million tonnes (compared to 25.222 million tonnes).

Additionally, the Ministry provided data on Ukrainian flour exports stood at 87.8 thousand tonnes since the beginning of the season. This marks a decrease from the 130.8 thousand tonnes exported during the same period in the previous marketing year. The majority of this flour export consists of wheat flour, with 83 thousand tonnes shipped.

The surge in grain exports from Ukraine underscores the country's pivotal role in global grain markets and its resilience in meeting international demand, despite challenges such as geopolitical tensions and logistical constraints. With the continued strength of its agricultural sector, Ukraine remains a key player in ensuring food security worldwide.
