Imported Matar Prices Spike as Chana Supply Tightens

Mumbai, 10 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): Imported matar (pea) prices in the Mumbai market have increased, following a similar upward trend seen in domestic chana (chickpea) prices. This surge in chana prices is attributed to reduced arrivals post-Holi festival and the temporary closure of several local mandis due to ongoing festivities.

Prices for Canadian and Russian matar imports have increased by Rs 75/quintal within Mumbai. This increase is primarily driven by the recent spike in prices for domestic tur (pigeon pea) and chana.

The future price outlook for matar remains closely linked to the trajectories of tur and chana. Reduced arrivals of both pulses after Holi, along with limited existing supply, have triggered the sharp price increases. As a result, substitute pulses like masur (lentils) and matar have also witnessed price increases.

Market analysts are closely observing for signs of improved chana and tur arrivals as mandis reopen next week. The pace of these arrivals will significantly influence the direction of matar prices in the near term.
