Mumbai, 04 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Chana (chickpea) prices in selected mandis and tadng centers have experienced a significant rise due to a combination of strong demand at lower prices and improved quality resulting from dry weather conditions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that April temperatures will likely remain above normal, with heatwave warnings issued for major states. This suggests that prices will remain firm as the lower moisture content in the crop is maintained.

Market analysts note that chana bilty prices in major markets have steadily increased by Rs 50-100 per quintal, propelled by strong demand from dal manufacturers. Buyers are actively seeking to cover the crop, which is expected to be lower than usual.

Harvesting is in its final stages, with 80-90% of the crop already collected. Due to recent dry weather in major growing regions, harvesting activity is expected to conclude within a week. As the harvest winds down, arrivals should decrease, and the improved quality due to dry produce is expected to lead to higher prices in the coming days. Government procurement initiatives are also expected to provide a further boost to prices.
