Mumbai (Commodities control) - Red chilli prices continue to rise on Thursday, for the Fourth Trading session this week, amid rising demand and weak arrivals in Warangal today. All the chilli varieties at Guntur and Warangal mandis rode higher today.

Traders reveal that prices of red chilli has gone up by over 15 per cent per quintal due to increase in demand during this season. Almost all the varieties of red chillies are selling at Rs 12,000 to 16,000 per quintal in Asia's biggest Guntur Mirchi Yard. Prices are expected to remain firm.

Due to unexpected and sudden rains during September and October, the chilli crop was damaged in the State. Farmers uprooted the damaged chilli gardens in 10% of the area. Cyclones also damaged the chilli gardens. As a result, the demand for quality red chilli increased.

Guntur mandi witnessed arrivals of 100,000 bags on Thursday. It is to be noted that during the week, the arrivals have been ranging between 1-1.40 Lakh bags and have increased last week. All the chilli varieties in Guntur priced were Rs 1-10/Kg higher. Teja, DD and No.5 chilli varieties have risen by Rs 2 each today. Chilli prices have gained nearly Rs 5-26/Kg for different varieties since Monday.

Meanwhile in Warangal, all the red chilli varieties barring ‘Tomato’ were priced higher by Rs 1-8 per Kg. Prices of red chilli variety ‘Tomato’ dropped Rs 5/Kg after the variety shot up by Rs 20/Kg in the prior two sessions. The mandi reported arrivals of 50,000 bags vs 60,000 bags in the last session.

Prices of chilli rose in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, due to strong bulk demand from local and overseas buyers.Stockists are aggressively buying because of low availability of premium quality in the market.

Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched a purchase centre at Purchur in Prakasam district. Chilli merchants have been roped into buying stocks from local farmers at the agriculture market yard premises in the town. Purchur region in Prakasam district is one of the biggest producers of chilli in the state.

State Deptt officials are holding negotiations with chilli merchants and exporters in Guntur and Ongole and prevailed upon them to open their shop in the Purchur agriculture market yard. While the marketing department is creating the required infrastructure in the market yard premises, the merchants are deputing their agents to pick up the stocks.

Stocks purchased from the farmers are being transported to cold storages near Guntur by merchants. Farmers are expected to benefit with reasonable prices and also be relieved of the burden of taking their stocks to Guntur market yard. Sources said farmers of Purchur, Chirala, Addanki and Bapatla would also benefit from the new initiative.
