Mumbai (Commodities Control) – Indonesia palm oil exports and production both fell in the first half of the year due to drier weather and lower demand brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, said Joko Supriyono, chairman of the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI).
Output in Indonesia, the world's biggest producer of palm oil, fell 8.9% to 23.5 million tonnes for the January-June period.
"I think the main factor is last year's dry weather, and the consequence from 2018 when prices were very low," Supriyono said.
GAPKI said palm oil exports in the first half fell to 15.5 million tonnes, down 11.7% from 17.55 million in the first half of 2019.

"70% of our palm oil is exported and almost all export destination countries experienced a contraction in demand due to the lockdown," Supriyono said. "The main markets in Europe, India, China... experienced a very significant decline," he said.
Despite lower exports of palm oil generally, exports of oleochemicals, a compound processed into products that end up in sanitiser products, jumped nearly 24%.
"As almost all of the world's population need sanitation products for their daily activities, it is only natural for export and domestic consumption of oleochemical products to have increased," said Rapholo Hutabarat, chairman of Indonesia's Oleochemical Association.
Indonesia's biodiesel production stood at 4.88 million kilolitres, the Indonesia Biodiesel Producers Association (APROBI) told the same virtual conference.
Domestic biodiesel consumption stood at 4.18 million kilolitres while exports stood at 10,314 kilolitres, APROBI said.
