Mumbai (Commodities Control) – In an interesting turn of events, guar acreage that was racing ahead by 21% in Rajasthan, so far, is lagging by 20%. It is to be noted that this drastic change in the sowing figures happened in a span of just three days.

According to crop progress report as on 10th July, guar has been cultivated in 4.09 Lk hectares vs 5.07 lakh hectares in the corresponding period last year.

Meanwhile, according to the figures indicated by State Agricultural Department on 7th July guar cultivation touched 3.59 Lk hectares which was 21% higher than the number achieved in the corresponding period last year.

Rajasthan is the biggest producer of guar in the country, with a share of 80% in the national total.

The reason behind this sudden change in the area of acreage lays in the fact that cultivation of coarse grains, moong, groundnut and soybean has picked pace in the state.

Farmer inclination has been towards those crops which assures Government’s minimum support price (MSP) in return for their produce.

According to rajasthan Agriculture Department as on July 10th, moong acreage in the state touched 8.7 Lk hectares, up 33% from last year. Gorundnut acreage upped 22% at 6.02 lk hectares and soybean sowing rose by 10% to 9.02 lk hectraes.

Acreage for Jowar and Bajra upped 28% and 12% at 2.82 Lk hectares and 18.15 Lk hectares respectively.

Guar seed prices have upped 17% since lockdown. Although the commodity has witnessed some price pressure after touching 4 months high levels. Meanwhile guar gum touched the level of 3 months high last month, from which prices have given 6%. Weak exports are believed to be the reason behind this price fall.

As per APEDA, guar gum exports fell 29% in 2019-20. According to the traders, just 10% of the regular exports have been witnessed in the current financial year.
