MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) - Spot jeera prices ruled weak at the major Unjha and Rajkot markets in Gujarat on Monday, because of prospects of higher crop compared to last year in the wake of sharp increase in acreage in Gujarat and Rajasthan and favourable weather across the growing regions.

Arrivals today stood at 5,000 bags at Unjha and 850 bags at Rajkot. At Unjha mandi, the price of rough jeera was at Rs 2620-2,670 while the price of NCDEX variety ruled at Rs 2,770-2,870/20 kg.

According to traders, jeera production in the country is expected to grow by around 20-25 percent this season.

Meanwhile, total area sown under jeera/cumin in Gujarat, the largest producing state, was at 4.87 lakh hectares as on January 13 in the current 2019-20 rabi season, up 40 percent from 3.48 lakh hectares over the year-ago period, as per the state agriculture department's data.

Jeera for delivery in March at the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) ended lower by Rs 190 or 1.26 percent at Rs 14,910 per quintal after moving in the range of Rs 15,055 and Rs 14,870 per quintal.
