India's 2018-19 Rabi Crops Sowing Down 4.26% Y/Y At 610.92 Lakh Hectare

NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) - Total area sown under rabi (winter-sown) crops were at 610.92 lakh hectare as on February 8 in the current season, down by 4.26 percent or 27.20 lakh hectare from 638.13 lakh hectare over the year-ago period, as per the Agriculture Ministry's data.

Wheat has been sown in 297.54 lakh hectare so far in the rabi season of the 2018-19 crop year (July-June) as against 299.84 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Sowing of rabi crops begin from October and harvesting from March. Wheat is the main rabi crop.

Among winter crops, planting of oilseeds has been slightly down as farmers have covered 80.40 lakh hectare so far. In the year-ago period, oilseeds were sown in 80.98 lakh hectare. Among oilseeds, mustard/rapeseed acreage was higher by 3.44 percent at 69.37 lakh heactare from 67.06 lakh hectare.

In case of pulses, area was lagging behind at 155.12 lakh hectare so far this rabi season as against 165.12 lakh hectare in the same period last year. Among pulses, chana acreage reached 96.50 lakh hectare so far, down 10.15 percent from 107.40 lakh hectare achieved in the same period last year.

Coarse cereals area was covered in 48.30 lakh hectare as against 56.90 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
