India Cotton Planting Ahead 17% From 2016; Good Rains Witnessed During The Week

NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) - Cotton planting reached 119.67 lakh ha as of August 24, ahead 17 percent compared to same period last year at 102.54 lakh ha according to Ministry of Agriculture.

Cotton planting has progressed 97.72 percent of the total normal area(5 year avg) at 122.46 lakh ha and remained ahead 6.4 percent from the normal area as on date at 112.44 lakh ha showing signs of positivity in planting.

North India:
Reports from the field suggest that crop conditions were rated superior in North India with expectation of bumper crop for the 2017/18 season with the first lot of new crop likely to begin from first half of September. Early arrivals of new crop has begun in Haryana totaling at 2,350 bales as of August 24.

Forecast of heavy rains is likely to persist over Rajasthan for the next 72 hours while Punjab and Haryana will likely receive modest rains.

Central India:
Normal rains at regular intervals has relived stress of poor yield in Maharashtra while good to widespread of rains were recorded in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

IMD forecasts widespread rains over Maharashtra for entire next week followed by Madhya Pradesh which may witness heavy rains over next 72 hours.

South India:
Most regions were receiving rains on timely intervals and no major crop concerns were reported. Pest intensity was recorded at low levels and timely sprayed pesticides will curb growth in certain regions.

Karnataka and Telangana forecasts widespread rains in the next 72 hours.

Following data is the state wise cotton acreage report as on August 24. The weekly report is compiled by Directorate of Cotton Development, Nagpur and released by Ministry of Agriculture, India.
