NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) - Cotton planting reached 117.11 lakh ha as of August 10 compared to same period last year at 99.03 lakh ha according to Ministry of Agriculture.
Cotton planting has progressed 95.63 percent of the total normal area at 122.46 lakh ha and remained ahead 2.4 percent from the normal area as on date at 117.11 lakh ha showing signs of positivity in planting.
Reports from the field suggest that crop conditions were rated superior in North India with expectation of bumper crop for the 2017/18 season with the first lot of new crop likely to begin from first half of September.
Trade sources confirmed that Saurashtra, which cover 73 percent of the total Gujarat cotton area, will likely incur minimal damage below market speculation of 20-30 percent. Gujarat crop assessment is underway with probability of final report to be released next week according to district officials.
However, fresh concerns rose over the crop condition in Maharashtra which has experienced deficient rains in 3 consecutive weeks. Light rains may likely occur over the next few days however, the region requires a good round of heavy rains over sowing belts in order to dissolve all fear related to poor yield.
Following data is the state wise cotton acreage report as on August 10. The weekly report is compiled by Directorate of Cotton Development, Nagpur and released by Ministry of Agriculture, India.
