Mumbai, April 29 (Commodities Control): Domestic pepper prices in major markets continued to show upward trend, driven by robust demand, escalating global prices, and tighter supply conditions. Increased inquiries from stockists and exporters in the past week have boosted prices. However, given the substantial recovery of nearly Rs 16,000-18,000 per quintal over the last fortnight, further upward movement is expected to be limited.

In the domestic scenario, pepper prices surged by Rs 200 per quintal. Garbled pepper in Cochin is currently priced at Rs 58,600 per quintal, while ungarbled pepper is quoted at Rs 56,600. In Karnataka, prices ranged between Rs 56,500 and Rs 58,500 per quintal.

Vietnamese pepper prices experienced a slight decline of VND 500-1,000 per kilogram after reaching a record high, attributed to decreased purchasing activity. Prices now range between VND 96,000 and 97,000 per kilogram. Despite this retracement, Vietnam has seen a remarkable 60% year-on-year price increase, driven by lower output and a tighter market balance resulting from aggressive exports. Global FOB prices have remained stable.

Vietnam's pepper exports in March totaled 25,917 tons, marking a 92.7% increase from the previous month but a 27.3% decline compared to the previous year. Accumulated exports for the first quarter amounted to 56,783 tons, down 25.4% year-on-year but up 1% in terms of value.
