Chickpea Prices Spike in India Amidst Limited Supply

Mumbai, 25 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Chana (chickpea) prices have experienced a sharp increase in markets across India. The rise is attributed to reduced arrivals and reluctance by stockists and farmers to sell. Additionally, a lower production forecast for this season further bolsters prices, despite a sharper increase in supply of matar (a cheaper substitute of chana).

In major trading centers (mandis), prices have risen by Rs 50-150 per quintal. Delhi markets report prices of Rs 6,400 per quintal for chana sourced from Rajasthan and Rs 6,350 per quintal for those originating from Madhya Pradesh. These prices represent a 4-5 month high due to the tightening supply and inactive sellers.

Market analysts expect the limited supply and govermetn purchase at MSP to maintain upward pressure on prices in the near future. However, they predict that substantial price increases are unlikely as a result of ample supply of matar.
