Mumbai, 03 Mar 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Desi Masur (lentil) prices in major Indian mandis (wholesale markets) have increased due to improved quality arrivals. Recent drier weather in key growing regions has significantly reduced moisture content in the crop. Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts above-normal temperatures for North India in April, further improving quality and reducing moisture content.Imported masur prices also increased on improved demand as market reopen after a long pause.

However, choti masur prices in major markets of Northern Uttar Pradesh declined by Rs 50 per quintal due to increased arrivals. Harvesting in Northern UP is currently at its peak, leading to higher market supplies and downward pressure on prices.

Elsewhere, bilty masur prices increased by Rs 25-50 per quintal across most markets, with the exception of Kanpur, where prices remained stable. This stability follows price increases in Kanpur during the past two sessions.

Imported masur prices were mostly stable, with Delhi and Kolkata reporting increases of Rs 25-50 per quintal. The lower quality of the domestic crop due to weather conditions is likely to support prices for imported masur, which is known for its higher quality. The future trajectory of masur prices will depend on the pace at which new crop arrivals gain momentum, as well as the extent of government procurement activities.
