Mumbai, 05 Feb 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):In a remarkable surge, Australian lentil exports saw a significant increase in the month of December. As reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, chickpea exports tripled in December in comparison to November, reaching an impressive 94,763 tonnes. Bangladesh emerged as the principal purchaser, accounting for 79% of the total with 74,574 tonnes, in anticipation of the Ramadan period.

Lentil exports in December were almost twice the volume of November's 119,134 tonnes. This substantial increase reflects the new-crop availability from the South Australian and Victorian ports.

India positioned itself as the leading buyer of Australian lentils in December, importing 152,407 tonnes which represents 64% of the total exports. Following India, Turkey and Bangladesh were also notable buyers with 27,100 tonnes and 22,204 tonnes, respectively.

Additionally, while Bangladesh was predominant in chickpea purchases, countries like Nepal and the United Arab Emirates made significant buys, importing 4,352 tonnes and 4,010 tonnes, respectively.
