Mumbai, 17 May (Commoditiescontrol): The government has launched an early registration drive for farmers ahead of the kharif crop season, targeting onions, tur, and urad, with the goal of creating a buffer stock and implementing market intervention measures during sharp price declines.

According to a report by the Financial Express, farmer cooperatives like Nafed and the NCCF are encouraging farmers to register on the consumer affairs ministry's portal before sowing kharif crops, set to begin next month. This initiative aims to assess crop sizes, aiding logistical planning for storage and distribution of commodities like onions and pulses. Despite registration, farmers retain the freedom to sell their produce to private traders if offered higher prices than government agencies.

NCCF and Nafed oversee the gradual release of procured stocks in major cities to prevent price hikes, supported by the price stabilization fund managed by the consumer affairs department. Additionally, the government plans to irradiate 5000 tonnes of onions this year to enhance shelf life and reduce storage losses, procuring them from farmers for buffer stocking under the stabilization fund.
