NEW DELHI (Commodities control) Sugar prices zoomed today after expectations of decision by the government regarding Minimum Support Price (MSP) and export subsidy. Millers across the country raised selling prices by Rs. 15-50 per quintal. Therefore, sugar prices jumped up to Rs. 90 per quintal in various markets.

According to trade sources, the government can take decision on MSP and export subsidy by next week. Proposed policy initiatives are key factors for sugar prices. MSP was proposed to increase from current Rs. 31 to Rs. 33 per quintal. Export subsidy was also important proposal to dispose additional sugar available in current season. Sugar prices zoomed up to Rs. 90 per quintal in Muzaffarnagar. Delhi, Bareilly, Kanpur and other north Indian markets witnessed highest price rise. According to a trader from Delhi market Mr. Sushil Agrawal, sugar supply from millers also disrupted because of strict compliance of Covid-19 protocol. Police was imposing hefty penalty for not wearing mask and other violations of the protocol. Lower supply also caused for price rise in northern markets. Other markets also registered price rise of Rs.  20-30 per quintal.
