India's 2019-20 Rabi Crops Sowing Down 15% Y/Y Till Nov 8

NEW DELHI (Commoditiescontrol) - Total area sown under rabi (winter-sown) crops were at 95.35 lakh hectares as on November 8 in the current 2019-20 season, down by 15.05 percent or 16.89 lakh hectares from 112.24 lakh hectares over the year-ago period, as per the Agriculture Ministry's data released on Friday.

Wheat has been sown in 8.69 lakh hectares so far in the 2019-20 rabi season as against 15.35 lakh hectares in the year-ago period. Sowing of rabi crops begin from October and harvesting from March. Wheat is the main rabi crop.

Among other winter crops, planting of oilseeds has been slightly up as farmers have covered 39.65 lakh hectares so far. In the year-ago period, oilseeds were sown in 37.66 lakh hectares. Among oilseeds, mustard/rapeseed acreage was higher at 37.42 lakh heactares from 35.38 lakh hectares.

In case of pulses, area was lagging behind at 27.85 lakh hectares so far this rabi season as against 39.93 lakh hectares in the same period last year. Among pulses, chana acreage reached 19.82 lakh hectares so far from 26.63 lakh hectare achieved in the same period last year.

Coarse cereals area was covered in 12.39 lakh hectares as against 13.54 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
